Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Current Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three races left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
